Tuckpointing vs. Repointing: Which Is Right For You?

At Lintel, Tuckpointing & Masonry Repair, we’re asked by customers all the time to explain the difference between tuckpointing and repointing. It’s no surprise since many have been told they’re the exact same thing. Well, they’re not; and while many in the industry may use them interchangeably, a property owner should know the difference.

The Simplest Explanation

That’s where we come in. Normally, we explain it in the simplest possible terms. Tuckpointing is maintenance. It’s putting a band-aid on a wound, but it’s not treating the wound’s original cause. Repointing is different. It’s focused on identifying the problem and completely solving it. Again, they’re the same process, in most ways, taken to different extremes.

A Bit More On Tuckpointing

Now that we know the simple differences between the two, we can look at what really separates them – their results. We’ll start with tuckpointing. Tuckpointing is, as stated above, maintenance. It’s not a long-term solution. It involves using two different mortars – one that matches the bricks and one that matches the existing mortar. It’s used to fill in the cracks, crevices, and gaps and give you a short-term solution that keeps water out and more damage from occurring. It can be an excellent option for specific cases, but it will never achieve the same lasting effects as repointing the same structure.

Why Repointing Is Better

We know that many customers want the least expensive solution to their masonry problems. That’s understandable. However, it has to be understood that repointing is just a longer lasting, better all-around solution to masonry problems. Why, you ask? Simple. Repointing involves the complete removal and replacement of the damaged mortar joints. It basically gives you back a new structure, at least from a strength perspective. It’s the long-term fix that tuckpointing will never be.

There Is Additional Cost

While we’ve shown that repointing is a more comprehensive solution to most masonry issues, it does come with added expense. This is only logical as it involves a much greater investment of time and energy to complete. But, it’s more impactful and will, in most instances, deliver a more lasting solution to your original problem. At the end of the day, it’s up to you whether to go for the solution or put on a band-aid.
